Estate Planning Is For Everyone

A Will gives you the opportunity to direct how your estate, whatever the size, is to be divided amongst those who are dear to you. If you do not have a current Will, the state may decide in accordance with state law who benefits from your estate and the result may be very different from what you had wished.

Creating a Will is not expensive, but failing to make a Will can become a costly affair for your potential beneficiaries. Having a legal Will therefore avoids problems and extra expenses for your loved ones at a challenging time.

Sometimes people feel they have nothing to give or do not have the means to contribute during their lifetime. You can, however, plan for the future by leaving a bequest through the distribution of your assets, regardless of your age or financial situation.

If you have already written your Will and do not wish to make major changes, you can add a codicil (an amendment to an existing Will) to include Miners’ Promise. Your solicitor can help you with any changes. We advise you to contact your financial or legal adviser as early as possible to discuss your intentions before leaving a bequest.

How to include a gift in your Will

If you’re thinking about making a special bequest through your Will, we can help you understand the options available, the process (including words to use in your Will), and what happens next.

It’s important to seek independent and professional advice when considering leaving a special bequest. A solicitor can help you understand your options and ensure your Will is legal and valid – so you know your wishes will be carried out.

The size and nature of your gift will depend on your personal and family circumstances.

Every gift is powerful. Your solicitor can help make the choice that is right for you and your loved ones.

Step 1
Choose the type of gift you want to give

As a guide, the main types of bequest are:

  • Residuary gift: After making provision for your family and loved ones, you can choose to give part or the balance of your estate to Miners’ Promise.
  • Percentage: You can donate a percentage of your entire estate.
  • Pecuniary gift: You can nominate to give a specific dollar value.
  • Specific items of value: You can give particular items, such as property, shares and life insurance funds.
  • Whole estate: You can leave your entire estate to Miners’ Promise.

Step 2
Update or make your Will

It’s important to seek independent and professional advice from a reputable solicitor to make sure your Will is legal and valid.
